IBM is a pioneer in the quantum computing industry. This year, she introduced the first commercial quantum computer - Q System One. Now engineers have set themselves an ambitious goal: annually doubling the performance of quantum computers.

Such a development plan is comparable to Moore’s law for traditional computers. The main difference is that the computing power is determined by the quantum capacity, and not by the number of transistors. This parameter takes into account not only the number of qubits but also how many of them can be used simultaneously.

Thus, the Q System One quantum capacitance is 16 qubits. If engineers stick to the plan, by 2025 this figure will be 1000 qubits.

According to IBM Research Vice President Jeffrey Welser, the superiority of quantum computers over conventional computers will become noticeable when the number of qubits exceeds 50. According to the current forecast, this will happen in 2021.

A quantum computer uses the principle of superposition: it performs operations with qubits (quantum bits), which can simultaneously be in two states (1 and 0). This will increase productivity for certain classes of tasks millions of times.
