Gadget Project Alias will prevent voice assistants to spy on you January 18, 2019 | 12:56 / Technological innovations

Today, millions of people are using the voice home helpers at Google Home and Amazon Echo, as a result of which more and more accessories have come to market. So, at CES-2019 dozens of companies announced gadgets that complement Google Assistant and Alexa, which significantly expand their capabilities, in particular, to manage "smart" homes.

Among them, the Project Alias gadget developed by hackers - and part-time designers - Björn Karman and Tore Knudsen deserves special attention.

Project Alias is a small, open-source device that sits on top of a voice assistant and relays user commands to it. The peculiarity of this process is that due to the gadget, the possibility of information leakage is excluded, since it possesses AI and is trained locally - that is, it follows the commands of its user only.

The need for Project Alias was not accidental. As it turned out, voice assistants are either easily bugged or even “share” the received information incomprehensibly with whom. Having such an intermediary at his disposal, he can be programmed to transmit commands other than those he hears, which allows him to be customized for himself.
