A holographic screen presented August 02, 2018 | 12:16 / Technological innovations

American developers of Looking Glass have created a screen capable of displaying a holographic image of an object in 3D format without special auxiliaries.

Novelty offers a more comfortable viewing of 3D models. Soon the company will present plug-ins for special programs that are used in 3D-modeling. It is reported that part of the funds for the production of the device on Kickstarter has already been collected.

Special glasses for viewing 3D-images or helmets of virtual reality, as shown by practice, can not realistically display voluminous images. Therefore, engineers have long been working on creating a device that would make it easier to view 3D models. For this purpose, they used passive lens arrays that show three-dimensional objects simultaneously to several people. At the same time, observers are in different places relative to the screen.

According to the developers, the device breaks the 3D model into 45 flat images taken from different viewing angles and combines them into one flat image. "Optical deception" of the current volumetric image is formed due to the lenticular raster, installed in front of the screen.

The new device will be used by professional designers and designers of models for 3D-printing. In the future, glass designers plan to create plug-ins for quick viewing of models on popular 3D modeling software: Maya, Blender, Zbrush, Solidwork and Tinkercad.
