China has developed a 3D scanner to test airport security July 12, 2018 | 05:11 / Technological innovations

China has developed a 3D scanner at millimeter wavelengths to test security at airports. The new device is characterized by faster response, higher accuracy and requires less work force than metal detectors. The scanner was designed and built by the academy, which is part of the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, the largest rocket manufacturer in the country.

The device visualizes the whole body, using the form of electromagnetic radiation to detect objects hidden under human clothes. It can detect up to 89 dangerous or risky items for 1 second, including corrosive or flammable liquids that remain invisible to existing body scanning devices.

The device works with 95 percent accuracy. This means that most security officers will be exempted from labor-intensive manual inspection. According to the creators, the scanner will significantly increase the efficiency of checkpoints and at the same time will be more convenient for passengers.
