Infrared light can a thousand times increase the speed of the Internet October 04, 2017 | 04:07 / Technological innovations

Professor of the Technical University of Eindhoven introduced a new method of data transmission using infrared light, which is much more efficient than conventional Wi-Fi or even 5G.

The new data transmission system uses infrared antennas that direct invisible beams to connected devices. The speed of such a connection can reach 112 Gb / s. In this case, the channel is not divided between all devices, each gadget will receive such a speed. Whereas Wi-Fi is forced to distribute bandwidth and operates at lower speeds.

Principle of operation
The model of the "infrared" Internet consists of a light source and a small optical receiver on the device itself. The source of infrared light is a bundle of optical fibers and a lens, through which the signal is routed exactly to the device. On the smartphone or tablet should be installed a receiver, consisting of a wide-angle lens and photodiodes for converting the optical signal into digital.

While researchers have not learned how to transfer data on IR light back, so that it uses Wi-Fi. But usually devices transmit much less data than they consume, so this should not be a big problem, reports Spectrum website.

Another Wi-Fi is used to position the device in space, so that the source of IR light can accurately direct the signal. If the user leaves the room, the system automatically switches to another source. But while the author of the discovery, Professor Tom Cunen, does not talk about plans to release technology to the masses.
