IBM scientists set a new world record, putting 330 terabytes of uncompressed data (equivalent to 330 million books) in a drive that can fit in the palm of your hand.

The recording of 201 gigabytes per square inch (2.54 cm) of the prototype of the deposited magnetic tape is more than 20 times higher than the recording density that is used today in commercial tape drives. The recording density is the amount of information that can be stored in a given area of the surface.

According to them, while the manufacture of the deposited magnetic tape will cost a little more than existing commercial tapes, but over time the possibility of creating a large volume will lead to a reduction in the cost of one terabyte.

Magnetic tapes were invented more than 60 years ago and have traditionally been used for archiving tax documents and medical records. IBM's first tape division used a tape half an inch wide, which contained about two megabytes of data.
