An application for ideal selfies was developed August 02, 2017 | 05:12 / Technological innovations

Computer scientists from the University of Waterloo have developed an application for smartphones that helps people make an ideal selfie. This is an algorithm that directs the user to install the camera at the location from which the image will be the best possible.

In the process of working on the algorithm, scientists bought digital 3D scans of average people. They made hundreds of "virtual photos" by writing codes for managing the virtual camera of the smartphone and computer lighting. This allowed them to study various principles of composition, including the direction of lighting, position and size of the face.

After this, using an online crowdsourcing service, thousands of people choose the best virtual photos and scientists mathematically modelled the voting pattern to develop an algorithm that can help people make the most successful photos.

Later, real people did selfie first with a standard camera application, and then with a new one. Based on online ratings, the researchers concluded that the new development improved the selfie by 26 percent, focusing on aspects such as hairstyle, type of smile and attire.
