Engineers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania have developed a device that screws a lamp or chandelier, which allows you to project application interfaces for the PC, to various surfaces and manipulate them with gestures. The article devoted to the development was posted on the site of the postgraduate student named Robert Xiao.

As N + 1 writes, such a development is not the first of its kind, and prototypes of devices that project computer interfaces on different surfaces have existed for a long time. However, most of them have a common drawback, which is that the interface should be projected onto a flat surface that is free of foreign objects.

Unlike these developments, a system called Desktopography is able to independently determine free space and project program windows onto it. Also, these windows can be moved, scaled and "tied" to objects on the table. In the case of a binding, the window will move behind the object being moved (for example, a book or laptop). If the user places an object on the projected window, it automatically moves to the side.

Designed by the engineers, the device for displaying the interface is a projector connected to a PC, equipped with a depth camera and a standard lamp socket, which allows the projector to be screwed into a table lamp or chandelier. For processing data from the camera of the device and correcting the image, the program running on the PC is responsible.

According to the developers, the presented device in the future will be able to replace additional monitors, which many users connect to their PCs to work with several programs at the same time. According to the engineers, it will take about five years to complete the projector before the commercial version.
