One of the founders of the Internet technology World Wide Web (WWW), British scientist Tim Berners-Lee awarded Turing Award - the most prestigious award in the field of computer science and information technology. This was announced by the New York-based Association of Computing Machinery.

As noted by the Association, which is the largest international organization in the field of computer and computing technologies, the prize is awarded to Berners-Lee "for the invention of the World Wide Web system, the first web browser and the underlying protocols and algorithms that influenced the spread of the Internet."
61-year-old Berners-Lee in an interview with the Associated Press (AP) said that he was grateful to the Association for the award, which he called a truly "royal award." "I believe that this is a prize primarily for the project itself to create the World Wide Web, as well as the global international spirit of cooperation and all those who joined to help me," he said.

Berners-Lee is the inventor of a number of key Internet protocols and languages, including HTTP, HTML and URL. Together with the Belgian scientist Robert Cayo, he created the World Wide Web system, which provides access to related files located on various computers connected to the Internet. In 2004, Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain made Berners-Lee Knights Commander, American magazine Time included it in the list of the 100 most outstanding people of the twentieth century.

The Turing Award is often called the Nobel Prize in the Informatics World. This award, named after one of the founders of computer science, the English scientist Alan Mathison Turing (1912-1954), is awarded annually, beginning in 1966.
