"Metal X" 3 D printer January 12, 2017 | 11:23 / Technological innovations

2016 was a busy year for many companies in the 3D printing industry, but one of the busiest was Markforged. The US company made a name for themselves with their industrial-quality composite-material 3D printers, including the Mark One, the first-ever printer to print with carbon fiber, and the past year saw the release of their new Onyx material as well as two new printers in little over a month’s time: the industrial Mark X and the Onyx series.

Markforged’s claim to fame has always been their machines’ ability to print plastic composite parts with the strength of metal, but now the company has announced the release of a machine that prints with actual metal. Today at CES 2017, Markforged unveiled the Metal X, the first printer to leverage the company’s newly developed metal 3D printing technology: Atomic Diffusion Additive Manufacturing, or ADAM.

Markforged were founded by Greg Mark, an MIT aerospace engineer with a keen interest in motorsports racing in 2013.
