A group of researchers from the Catholic University of Chile under the direction of Professor Tamas Egan managed to create a fully functional artificial skin based on microalgae, which can be found in almost any pond. Moreover, the resulting skin is different from the usual rather strongly: it is green in color and capable of producing oxygen.

Any artificial skin no blood vessels, and therefore, no oxygen supply it will die. Leather-based microalgae itself produces oxygen and because of this are able to “live” up to 10 days. During this time the graft grow into blood vessels and then the skin gradually loses its green color, acquiring a normal color. With this the skin can be effectively treated various injuries, as it prevents the access of air to the wound and thus promotes healing, preventing infection to enter the body.

Seaweed skin has been tested on animals, and experiments involving human subjects planned at the beginning of 2017 . It is worth saying that the Professor Engana plans planned modification of the skin: it is possible to change the cells of algae so that they produce not only oxygen, but also, say, antibiotics or anti-inflammatory agents. In this case, the use of artificial skin will be more safe for the patient, and the regeneration process will proceed with fewer complications.
