On April 16, the opening ceremony of the "Olympiad on Informatics among university students" organized by the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies of AR, Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Ministry of Education of AR, and the Institute of Information Technology with the support of Qafqaz University was held. The Olympiad was dedicated to May 17 - World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

The event hosted by Qafqaz University was opened by the Deputy Minister of Communications and High Technologies of AR Elmir Valizadeh. He talked about the special attention paid by the government to the development information and communication technologies (ICT) and important measures taken in this field.

Afterwards, Qafqaz University Rector Natig Pasha stressed the importance of such competitions. He was followed by the head of the Department of Information Systems for Education Management of the Ministry of Education Ismayil Sadigov.  The Olympiad plays important role in identifying talented young people with innovative thinking in the field of ICT and their formation as professional staff, he stressed.

Head of Education Department at the Institute of Information Technology of ANAS Farhad Yusifov made a speech on the Development Concept "Azerbaijan 2020: vision to future" y approved by the head of the country, which includes the development and wide application of ICT in all areas, ICT training and capacity building for the youth.

Chairman of the Olympiad Jury, BSU associate professor Ramin Mahmudzadeh spoke about the importance of the competition, which has been held annually since 2007.

Later in the first round of the Olympiad took place. 55 teams consisting of 3 students in each from 22 universities took part in the first stage. The teams represented higher education institutions of Baku, Ganja, Nakhchivan, Mingachevir, and Sumgayit.

Note that the final stage of the Olympiad will be held on April 30 at the Institute of Information Technology of ANAS. 4 teams with best results will be winners of the final. The Winners of will be presented diplomas and certificates, as well as precious gifts from "HP", "Pomegranate" and "Caspian Telecom" companies provided by the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies of AR.
